Basic Function and Responsibility:
Under general supervision, supervise the activities of Police Officers, Guards and Cadets. Implement program initiatives, plan special events, schedule personnel, develop and utilize a budget, perform a variety of administrative tasks and patrol buildings to insure safety and security for personnel, buildings and grounds. Become familiar with buildings, facilities, fire-related equipment, radio communication systems and the building surveillance system. Based on knowledge of the law and college policies and procedures, exercise independent judgment regarding unusual events. The sergeant must be able to work all shifts serve in an on-call capacity and also be able to work at the Des Plaines and Ray Hartstein Campuses. Serve as Acting Chief as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervise the activities and training of Police Officers, Guards and Cadets assigned to shifts. Provide direction and monitor staff based upon community policing principles. Implement traffic safety, crime prevention, emergency services, program initiatives and direct resources to calls for service.
Patrol interior and exterior of buildings for the prevention of crimes and to insure the safety of personnel and the security of property.
Inspect buildings and grounds for fire and other hazards, and prepare reports as required.
Investigate and prepare reports concerning traffic crashes, criminal activity and other miscellaneous reports.
Issue citations for moving or parking violations and develop traffic safety awareness.
Direct campus vehicle maintenance, repair, licensing and inspection program.
Direct traffic, assist motorists, investigate alarms, unlock entrances and exits and respond to requests or complaints regarding safety and security.
Serve as lead Police Department official during evening hours. Provide input into crisis management team and work with evening administrative staff to provide a safe, secure environment.
Direct the training and scheduling of police officers, cadets and guards assigned to work?in the Police Department.
Evaluate and administer commendatory recognition and corrective action, including discipline, of personnel under their direct supervision.
Basic certification in first aid and the use of AED equipment.
Utilize a variety of computer applications including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office applications, LEADS and other criminal justice data bases.
Receive and respond to a complaints, calls for service, criminal incidents and take appropriate action using sound judgment and decision making.
Qualify for and utilize firearms, defensive weapons or other instruments authorized for use by the Police Department.
Effect custodial arrests and exert physical control over resistive or combative people when necessary.
Assist in the development and administration of the Police Department's budget and the Department's policy and procedures.
Assist in the development, implementation and management of special projects in the Police Department.
Serve as Acting Chief as required.
Perform other job related duties as assigned.
Associate of Arts degree in Law Enforcement or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary.
Bachelor's degree in Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice is desirable.
Completion of advanced supervisory or management training is preferred.
Five years of law enforcement experience, e.g., police, military police, , or an equivalent combination of experience and training is necessary.
Certification as an Illinois Police Officer is required.
Ability to effectively communicate information, including when testifying in court.
Ability to work all shifts and serve in an on-call capacity.
Ability to interact professionally and tactfully with people of different levels of education, cultural backgrounds and life experiences and to exhibit an adequate level of respect to fellow employees and the College community at large.
Must possess a valid United States driver's license.
Must be able to travel between campus locations.
Hours: Monday - Friday 2:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Salary Range: $49,834
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, use their hands and fingers, operate objects, controls, tools or instruments including: radios, body cameras, tasers, computers, automobiles, emergency and investigative equipment, etc.; may be exposed to hazardous materials, chemicals, explosions or loud noises; reach with hands and arms, climb or balance; run, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; taste and smell; lifting, pulling, pushing; exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and /or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and /or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Have that ability to critically think and concentrate. Must be able to respond quickly and appropriately to unexpected changes in conditions.
