Descriptive Tasks/Responsibilities for Position

The City of Champaign seeks qualified candidates for a career opportunity as a Background Investigator in the Police Department.

Responsibilities of Position
This position supports the Office of Professional Standards. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: reviewing sworn and civilian applicant background packets; conducting in-person interviews of applicants’ employers, supervisors, co-workers, references, family members, etc.; collecting information about applicants through mail, email, and telephone interviews; summarizing detailed investigative findings in narrative form; participating in police officer recruitment; conducting pre-employment background interviews on prospective sworn and civilian applicants; and maintaining detailed filing system of required records and reports.

The annual starting salary range is $51,565- $58,702, DOQ, plus an excellent fringe benefits package. Applications, must be submitted online to champaignil.gov/jobs no later than Sunday, January 23, 2022.

Requirements

Required Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Five years of law enforcement and/or investigative experience within the last ten years.
• Or an equivalent combination of training and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Knowledge of investigative methods and techniques.
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
• Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and guidance regarding background checks for civilian and sworn positions.
• Availability to travel out of the local area and work nights/weekends, overtime, or alternate hours, as necessary.
• Current valid state-issued driver’s license and good driving record.
• Possess or be able to obtain within six months of hire, and maintain, L.E.A.D.S. and NCIC certification.
• Ability to demonstrate confidentiality and protection of confidential information in compliance with privacy laws and requirements.

Preferred Qualifications
• An associate’s or bachelor’s degree with coursework in criminal justice or a related field.
• Prior background investigation experience.
• Prior public sector law enforcement experience.

Drug screening and criminal background investigation will be required.
