The University of Tennessee at Martin seeks a Director of Public Safety. This is a senior-level management position reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration. The Director of Public Safety is responsible for directing UT Martin's efforts to provide a safe, secure and orderly environment for members of the campus community and visitors to the campus. This responsibility is fulfilled through crime prevention activities and education, enforcement activities, and extensive interactions with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Responsibilities
This position directs the operations of the Department of Public Safety which includes: police response, criminal investigations, building and event security, crime prevention training and assessment, parking enforcement, and RAVE alert text system.
The Director builds relationships with local law enforcement and emergency agencies, reviews terrorism intelligence reports from the Tennessee Fusion Center and FBI, and oversees campus security systems. This position serves as a member of the Joint Terrorism Task Force working group for West Tennessee and the University Working group of West Tennessee FBI.
The Director has administrative tasks which include managing budgets and personnel, developing operational plans, and reviewing crime reports, maintenance complaint reports, and administrative documents. This position chairs the Parking Authority Committee, resolves parking complaints, and hears parking appeals. The Director is responsible for adherence to various compliance related functions such as Clery, TIBRS, and the Annual Security Report.
The Director meets with students, faculty, and staff, individually and in groups, regarding specific safety, security, and parking concerns. The Director also meets with civic groups as a university representative and should feel comfortable speaking in public. The Director monitors weather situations, informs campus leadership about potential dangers and assists with decisions to cancel events or close the university. The Director engages with a variety of professional groups and serves on several safety and security related committees.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Ten years of law enforcement experience
• Five years of command experience
• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university
• Possession of Tennessee P.O.S.T. certification or be eligible for transition as described in Tennessee P.O.S.T. rule 1110-02-.03 6(b)
• Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate, valid Tennessee driver’s’ license or obtain within thirty (30) days of hire
• Possession or ability to obtain a certification of training for Law Enforcement Management and Administration (LEMA) per Tennessee P.O.S.T. rule 1110-04-.09 (6) within 6 months of hire
• Ability to pass a pre-employment background check, drug screening, physical and psychological examination
Preferred Qualifications:
• 15 years of command experience
• Master's Degree from an accredited college or university
• Graduate of a Police Command School, e.g. FBI National Academy or Southeastern Police Command School
• National Incident Management System (NIMS) trained
• Experience managing all types of emergencies
• TN POST certified
• Campus law enforcement experience
• Experience using Microsoft Office suite programs
Minimum salary range: $92,158.00 - $100,000.00
